Maine Coon Cat

The Maine Coon is a large, long-haired cat that developed as a hardy working farm and ship cat in a cold climate, which shaped its size and coat. It has become popular for its striking looks and its gentle, people-loving temperament.

Size and build. Maine Coons are among the largest domestic cat breeds, with a long, muscular body, a broad chest, a long bushy tail, and often tufted ears and paws. They mature slowly, sometimes taking several years to reach full size.

Coat and grooming. The breed's shaggy, medium-to-long coat is semi-water-resistant and heavier around the neck and belly. It needs regular brushing — typically a few times a week — to prevent matting and manage shedding, with more attention during seasonal changes. The tail and "trousers" benefit from routine grooming.

Temperament. Maine Coons are often described as gentle, sociable, and almost dog-like — many enjoy following their people around, playing, and interacting. They tend to be friendly and adaptable, though as always the individual cat's personality varies.

Exercise and enrichment. Being large and playful, they appreciate sturdy climbing furniture, space, and interactive play. Their intelligence means puzzle feeders and games help keep them engaged.

Health awareness. As with several pedigree breeds, Maine Coons can be predisposed to certain inherited conditions; responsible breeders screen for them. A veterinarian can advise on appropriate care and any recommended screening for an individual cat.
